WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

Where Does It Come From?

The Week of the Dead is derived from the Mexican holiday Day of the Dead, or Dia De Los Muertos. Dia De Los Muertos is a two day holiday where families honor their departed family members. Instead of mourning the loss of loved ones, those who celebrate the Day of the Dead view it as a part of life. This is why the festivities include brightly colored skulls and costumes (and also why this page's backgrounds are in bright, vibrant colors!).

How Is It Different?

For one, it is in the name! The Week of the Dead is celebrated for a whole week. Furthermore, this holiday is actually celebrated four times a year! At the end of every season, the Week of the Dead begins, and it carries into the beginning of the next season.

However, the most distinct difference between Dia De Los Muerto and the Week of the Dead comes from what is being honored and celebrated. As mentioned above, the Day of the Dead is in memory of departed family members and loved ones. In turn, the Week of the Dead mainly focuses in honor of the animals and plants that made life on Mars possible. Each day has an associated animal, as well as a number of plants.

How Is It Celebrated?

The Week of the Dead is split up into three sections: The Harvest, The Sowing, and The Feast. The first two sols of the festival are dedicating to harvesting the previous seasons crops, and finally removing them from the farm lands. The next three sols are devoted to planting the new seeds for the upcoming season. Finally. The last two sols are set aside for laid back relaxation and feasts!
